Welcome to Glasstronomy Studios’ adult art glass workshop program. This season we are offering Zoom or in Studio sessions from September 10 to October 24, 2020. Some of these sessions span more than one day. Part 2 will be published in October with festive projects to get you in the mood for the holiday season. Registration is now open.

This season’s projects

Whether exploring a new technique, refreshing skills, or sampling the wonders of glass, this season is inspired by nature and Halloween.

During this time, we have discovered the wellness benefits of connectivity, learning, and creativity. Our in Studio and at home options offer you the chance to escape your routine and channel your energy into something you can enjoy this summer or ever after.

Courses

  • Course | B201 | Beginner stained and fused glass (September 10, 17, and 24, 2020)

    Welcome to the wonderful world of glass! Learn everything you need to know to immerse yourself in stained and fused glass this fall, from home or in our fully-equipped, spacious and safe studio environment. This three-week course will include hands on instruction in both traditional stained glass and the hottest craze, glass fusing. Participants will learn how to safely handle, cut and break sheet glass, copper foil and solder, as well as kiln fire art glass. Learn how to create an 8-inch stained glass sun-catcher and a 3-inch x 5-inch fused glass landscape.

    Materials, tool use, and project firing included.

    When: Thursdays, September 10, 17, and 24, 2020, from 7 to 10 pm

  • Course | G246 | Fusing technique | Forming with glass powder: Leaf Lad (October 1, 8, 15, and 22, 2020)

    Enjoy some quiet time at the Studio this fall and embrace the spirit of The Green Man, “the keeper of the forests and woods”. Inspired by our favourite fall colours, use COE 96 glass powder, Modeling Clay, CMC, forms and stencils to create The Green Man’s fall cousin, “Leaf Lad”. Learn how to sculpt, form, and carve glass powder to create a collection of fall foliage and other flora to layer and fire into a 12-inch, three-dimensional character.

    All tools, forms, materials, and project firings included.

    When: Thursdays, October 1, 8, 15, and 22, 2020, from 7 to 10 pm
    Fee: $325 + HST (includes all tools, forms, materials, and project firings)

    Join us from your home studio and embrace the spirit of The Green Man, “the keeper of the forests and woods”.     Tools required: Fusing kiln, kiln shelf, pen knife, spoon and multiple small containers, cellophane, palette, palette knife

    Materials required: Leaf and other foliate-shaped candy making molds and cookie cutters, a selection (six) of 96 COE glass powder in fall colours, 6-inch x 8-inch piece of neutral coloured 96 COE sheet glass, kiln wash or shelf paper

  • Tutorial | A422ZL | Zoom | Fusing technique | Glass flowing: Uber melts (September 19 and 26, 2020)

    Upcycle your fused glass misses into magical melts! Inspired by the unique and mystical flow of hot glass through apertures, these uber melts take glass flowing to the next level. Observe the process from the comfort and safety of your home and learn all you need to know about using stainless steel and fibre apertures in your home kiln. Kiln preparation, aperture preparation, and firing schedules will also be covered.

    Materials required: Assortment of fused glass projects (minimum ¼-inch thick), kiln shelf paper, fibre and stainless steel screen melt kits as listed under Optional

    Tools required: Fusing kiln, kiln shelf, kiln posts (assortment), craft knife, haik or other soft brush for applying kiln wash

  • Tutorial | G251ZL | Zoom | Fusing demonstration: Fused glass landscapes (October 24, 2020)

    Join fusing guru, Melanie Kidd, for an hour of technique as she demonstrates the various ways glass powder and frit can be pre-fired and then layered to create various stunning fused glass landscapes. Using 96 COE glass, frit, and powder, participants will learn how to create frittage, glass impasto, vitrigraph stringers, and many more landscape elements. Practice at home or during open Studio and translate all your favourite vistas into glass.

Workshops

  • Workshop | G247A or B | Fusing fun: Sunflower stake (September 12 OR 17, 2020) | FULL

    The next in the seasonal stake series, this vibrant, end-of-summer themed stake comes with its own busy little bees! Using 96 COE glass and accessories, participants will learn how to comb molten glass to create one-of-a-kind bumblebees to add to their 12-inch round sunflower base.

    All materials and project firings included. Stake optional.
    Dichroic glass not included.

  • Workshop | I415 | Stained and fused glass technique: Cast glass leaf box (September 19 and 26, 2020)

    With our new safety protocols and spacious workspace, our teaching Studio is ready for small groups of students to get back to doing the creative projects we all love! Join us for two afternoons exploring the versatility of art glass while creating this 6-inch round x 3-inch high stained glass contour box with a cast leaf lid. Chock-full of technique, participants will learn how to cast with duraboard and 96 COE glass and create three-dimensional contoured shapes with stained glass. Great for holding your countertop treasures or just showing off, this seasonally inspired project will prepare you for more complex shapes and sizes.

    All materials and project firing included.
    Beginner fusers are welcome!
    Glass cutting and soldering experience necessary.

  • Workshop | G248 | Mosaic technique | No Days Mosaic Film: Glass on glass mosaic (October 3, 2020)

    Glass on glass mosaic is a great way to use up your cathedral stained glass scrap and still have the beautiful effects of traditional stained glass without any need for glue or solder. During this one-day project preparation workshop, participants will select their pattern, learn how to use No Days Mosaic Film, collect an assortment of stained glass from our over-flowing bins and begin the process of glass on glass mosaic. Bring your cast off 18-1/2-inch Ikea glass tabletop (retired product: KLINGSBO side table) or use one of ours (first come, first served) and get started. Register for Studio time (3 sessions included), Tuesday evenings from 7 to 10 pm or Thursday afternoons 1 to 4 pm and peacefully work away at your project in our safely divided and sanitized workspace. Once complete, participants will return to grout and seal their project in Liquitex. This clear acrylic coating will seal your grout and glass giving it a durable and shiny finish. Make it a tabletop or frame it for hanging in the window.

    Pattern, No Days Mosaic Film, stained glass, grout, Liquitex, and Studio time (3 sessions) included.

  • Workshop | G249ZL | Zoom | Fusing fun: Halloween pandemic mask (October 17, 2020)

    Nothing has been scarier this year than COVID-19. Let’s turn the drab into the macabre and give this pandemic something to be afraid of! From the safety and comfort of your home studio, learn how to create this glow-in-the-dark souvenir version of the mask we all wear to protect each other. Using 96 COE glass, glow pigment, overglaze, paint, and fibre, participants will learn how to decorate and slump these masks to mark the memory for years to come.

    When: Saturday, October 17, 2020, from 10:30 to 11:30 am

  • Workshop | G250 | Halloween fusing fun: Ghost lamp and Bat bowl (October 17, 2020)

    These à la carte Halloween favourites will add to this year’s “spooktacular” ambience. Using 96 COE glass, glow pigment, and durafibre, participants will create a 20-inch diameter draped glow-in-the-dark Ghost lamp. Follow it up with your web woven 20-inch diameter Bat bowl and you’re ready to sit in the dark and eat lots of candy!

    Materials and firings included per project or in combination.
    Beginners are welcome!

  • Workshop | I416 | Intermediate soldering technique: Copper scape (October 24, 2020)

    Have you been saving that special piece of stained glass for just the right project? This is the opportunity to showcase it! In this sculptural, textural and multi-layered project, participants will explore all the different ways copper can complement stained glass. Using natural found objects, punches, and overlay techniques, participants will create an original glass and copper sculpture.

    ½-lb. solder, 12-inch square sheet copper foil, and hanger included.
