Welcome to Glasstronomy Studios’ adult art glass workshop program. This calendar details workshops and courses offered from January to March 2024.

The new year is the perfect time to engage in art glass exploration if it’s on your bucket list of resolutions. Our project-based learning program teaches best practices and techniques that will give you a taste of the possibilities. Explore the medium in a fun and friendly environment while creating something uniquely yours. Nurture your glass skills and let your creativity flourish!

How to register

To register, we currently accept payment in person (cash, Debit, MasterCard and Visa), by email (e-transfer), or by phone (MasterCard and Visa). Please note that HST will be added to the listed fee at time of payment.

Cancellation policy: A Studio credit will be issued for cancellations up to 48 hours before start date. We regret that Studio credits will not be issued under the 48-hour threshold.

Studio credits can be applied to a future purchase of a workshop or course.

Courses

  • Course | G286 | Fusing deep II: Freestyle cast glass sculpture (January 18 and 25, 2024)

    Capturing a large volume of glass in a stand-alone form that varies in shape and size is a beauty to behold. With bold colours and flow these 1-inch x 8-inch x 5-inch sculptures boast glossy surfaces without the aid of a lapidary wheel or belt sander. Participants will learn how to use stainless steel forms, angle firing, and diamond hand pads to achieve their one-of-a-kind showpiece. Kiln programs for firing deep will also be covered.

    Project materials, firing, and two diamond hand pads included.

    When: Thursdays, January 18 and 25, 2024, from 7 to 10 pm

  • Course | I442 | Intermediate fused and foiled panel (January 27, 2024)

    The beauty of light shining through glass has inspired us through the ages. With the availability of glass fusing, we can easily add a unique touch to a traditional favourite. During this multi-disciplinary five-week course, participants will learn how to cut and shape glass, and copper foil and solder a 14-inch diameter round window panel. Basic fusing principles of glass compatibility and layering using 96 COE glass and accessories will also be covered. Patterns of varying difficulty are available.

  • Course | B209 | Copper foil technique: Beginner stained glass panel (February 1, 8, 15, and 22, 2024)

    Welcome to the world of traditional stained glass! Whether you are new to the art form or want to revisit it, join us in our bright, well-equipped studio for a comprehensive introduction. This four-night course covers the safe handling of materials, studio etiquette, tool usage, glass cutting and shaping, copper foil technique, soldering, panel framing, and finishing. Industry professional, Melanie Kidd, will guide you through the completion of a 9-1/2-inch diameter round window panel that will prepare you for all you can dream up next! There are several patterns to choose from.

    Some glass, metals, chemicals, and tool usage included.

    When: Thursdays, February 1, 8, 15, and 22, 2024, from 7 to 10 pm

  • Course | A403 | Advanced glass fusing: Bigger IS Better (February 29, March 7, 14, and 21, 2024)

    Are you ready to “go big”? Back by popular demand, this four-week course is for advanced fusers ready to tackle projects like vessel sinks, wall or garden sculpture, and tabletops. With one-on-one guidance and instruction, participants will plan, design, execute, and fire one large project to completion. Space is limited but the possibilities are endless!

    Project glass, materials, and firings not included.

    When: Thursdays, February 29, March 7, 14, and 21, 2024, from 7 to 10 pm
    Fee: $295 + HST + project glass, materials, and firings


Workshops

  • Workshop | G287 | Soldering technique: Copper overlay chiminea (January 20, 2024)

    What better way to bask in the memories of the holidays than to upcycle your empty wine bottle? Participants will use the wet saw and lapidary wheel to remove the base of an empty and label less wine bottle, create a copper overlay design that will then be applied and soldered onto their bottle. Once complete with patina and polish, the decorative piece will sit on a base ready to be illuminated by candlelight.

    Beginners are welcome.
    All metals and chemicals included.

    When: Saturday, January 20, 2024, from 10 am to 4 pm
    Fee: $150 + HST (includes all metals and chemicals) + clean bottle (remove labels)



  • Workshop (FULL) | G288 | Fusing fun: Greeting cards (January 27 and February 3, 2024)

    In time for Valentines’ Day and Easter, these bright and cheerful mounted glass greeting cards are sure to wow their recipients! Participants will use 96 COE glass and glass accessories to create fused glass pictures that once fired will be mounted onto coloured card stock ready to gift away. Participants will create several glass pictures and three to four completed cards. Envelopes also included.

  • Workshop | G289 | Fusing fun: Fused glass wobblers (February 3, 2024)

    Brightly coloured and comical, these wire wobblers are a great way to introduce or refresh your Morton teeny circle cutter skills. Made with 96 COE glass and accessories, this pair of self-standing fused glass birds are created with various sized circles using the Morton System’s Teeny Circle Cutter. Participants will learn how to set up and execute the different sized circles, how to add wire inclusions, as well as maintain dimension using kiln safe fibre.

    When: Saturday, February 3, 2024, from 1 to 4 pm

  • Workshop | B206 | Beginner glass fusing (February 10, 2024)

    Play with colour and form as you explore the magic of fused glass art. Spend the day in our bright, spacious, and professionally equipped Studio while creating unique fused glass jewellery and a one-of-a-kind fused and slumped dish. In this comprehensive workshop, participants will learn about glass compatibility and volume control as well as glass cutting and shaping with our expert instructor.

    When: Saturday, February 10, 2024, from 10 am to 4 pm
    Fee: $195 + HST (includes all project materials, firings, and tool usage)

  • Workshop | G199 | Fusing technique: Powder migration (February 17, 2024)

    Glass powder being light weight and highly responsive to heat, can be manipulated into unique patterns and designs. Using 96 COE glass powder and kiln safe fibre, participants will spend the morning learning how to layer and migrate coloured glass powder in the mini-kilns while creating four test tiles. With results to share and discuss, participants will then create a twelve-inch fused and slumped dish showcasing their discovery. Pieces will undergo four different firing stages.

  • Workshop | G290 | Fusing technique: All about apertures (February 24, 2024)

    Are you ready to discover the beauty of flowing molten glass? Then this is the workshop you have been waiting for! Spend the day in Studio using 96 COE glass and various aperture bearing materials to create one-of-a-kind pours and melts. Participants will learn how to use ceramic, steel, and fibre to create single and multiple aperture bearing vessels they will load with glass and add to the kiln. Participants will also spend time manipulating hot glass to create vitrigraph and murine. Once fired, participants will have a collection of vitrigraph stringers, murine, two pot melts, one screen pour and one footed sculpture.

  • Workshop | G232 | Fusing fun: Stacked squares platter (March 2, 2024)

    Vibrant and dynamic, these stacked and fired platters are both functional and a pleasure to display! Participants will spend the day using 96 COE glass and the Morton System to cut and stack a multitude of colours that will be grouped and fired to create a twelve-inch square fused and slumped dish. The principles of volume displacement will also be covered.

    A full spectrum glass kit ($175 value) and project firings are included.

    Fee: $295 + HST (includes full spectrum glass kit and project firings)


  • Workshop | I443 | Intermediate stained glass: Memory dome (March 9, 2024)

    A new twist to a Studio favourite, only bigger and more dynamic! Backed onto that special piece of stained glass you have been saving for a special occasion, these pre-fired six-inch diameter clear glass domes will display your holiday treasures for all to enjoy. Once sealed and soldered, they will be framed in a nine-inch by nine-inch deep box frame. Basic decorative soldering techniques will also be covered.

    Soldering experience required.
    Glass domes, metals, chemicals, and box frame included.
    Background glass not included.

  • Workshop | G291 | Three-dimensional stained glass technique: Mini terrarium (March 16, 2024)

    There’s no better way to celebrate the coming of spring than with plants! Using clear bevels, copper foil and solder, participants will build a three-dimensional mini terrarium approximately three-inch x three-inch x five-inch. Once assembled, participants will learn how to embellish their terrariums with basic decorative soldering techniques. When complete, participants will add soil and succulent to take home and enjoy.

    Project and planting material included.
