Welcome to Glasstronomy Studios’ adult art glass learning program. This calendar showcases the courses and workshops offered from January to February 2023. This season offers various glass techniques for beginners to sample and the means for the more advanced to achieve their bucket list project. Registration is now open.

How to register

To register, we currently accept payment in person (cash, Debit, MasterCard and Visa), by email (etransfer), or by phone (MasterCard and Visa). Please note that HST will be added to the listed fee at time of payment.

Cancellation policy: A Studio credit will be issued for cancellations up to 48 hours before start date. We regret that Studio credits will not be issued under the 48-hour threshold.

Studio credits can be applied to a future purchase of a workshop or course.

Courses

  • Course (FULL) | B203 | Beginner/intermediate stained glass: Panel (January 19 and 26, and February 2, 9, 16 and 23, 2023)

    Stained glass windows have inspired, calmed, and enhanced spaces throughout the ages, with the beauty of light through colour and texture capturing stories and images to ponder and share. During this six-week course, participants will learn or develop the skills of glass cutting and shaping, applying copper foil and lead came, soldering and finishing a 10-inch by 16-inch stained glass panel. Safe handling of equipment and material will also be covered. Beginner and intermediate participants are welcome.

    Includes metal kit comprising of copper foil, lead came, zinc came, and solder, as well as project pattern (there are several designs to choose from).

    Glass is not included and can be purchased during the course.

    When: Thursdays, January 19 and 26, and February 2, 9, 16 and 23, 2023, from 7 to 10 pm
    Fee: $295 + HST (includes metal kit, pattern, and tool use) + Glass

  • Course (FULL) | A403 | Bigger IS better (January 21, 28, February 4, 11, 18, and 25, 2023)

    Once you have embraced art glass, you quickly realize bigger IS better! This six-week unit is for those stained and/or fused glass enthusiasts ready to tackle projects like vessel sinks, wall or garden sculpture, front door inserts and tabletops, to name a few! With one-on-one guidance, instruction, and support from a professional, participants will plan, design, and have access to our mighty machines to execute one large project to completion. Space is limited but the possibilities are endless!

    Materials, firings, pattern printing, and framing not included.

    When: Saturdays, January 21, 28, February 4, 11, 18, and 25, 2023, from 1 to 4 pm
    Fee: $295 + HST + materials, firings, pattern printing, framing

Workshops

  • Workshop (FULL) | G202 | Vitrigraph technique: Rods, stringers, and twisted cane (January 21, 2023)

    One of the best things about glass fusing is the lack of waste, as every piece—no matter how small—can be used to create beautiful artwork or material. Spend the afternoon in Studio recycling our 96 COE scrap glass into pulled glass cane. Using the vitrigraph kiln, participants will create their own rods, stringers, twisters, and unique “millefiori”. Once pulled, the bounty will be divided evenly between participants, ready to be used in your next masterpiece!

  • Workshop | B233 | Beginner fusing: Coasters and cabochons (January 28, 2023)

    Welcome to the wonderful world of glass fusing! Learn about thermal expansion while delighting your senses with colour and form. During this two-hour workshop, participants will learn how to safely handle tools and material while creating four coasters and cabochons.

  • Workshop | I440 | Fusing technique: Clay mold making (February 4, 2023)

    Are you a fuser who likes to shape your pieces in unique and original ways? Then it’s time to learn how to make your own ceramic molds! During this two-hour workshop participants will learn how to shape, set, and fire two ceramic molds suitable for glass slumping or draping. Bisque firing in a glass kiln will also be covered. Participants will make two molds up to 8-inch square.

    Clay and bisque project firing included.

    When: Saturday, February 4, 2023, from 10 am to 12 pm

  • Workshop (FULL) | G279 | Soldering technique: Be my Valentine (February 11, 2023)

    Stained glass and solder have the loveliest relationship, supportive and enhancing. Spend the morning learning the secrets to sculpturing solder into design, framing, and other decorative embellishments. Participants will create one three-inch by five-inch bead and solder overlay beveled glass hanging.

    Gift the art piece or the workshop to a loved one for Valentine’s Day!

  • Workshop (SPECIAL) | G205 | Fusing technique: Glass combing in the mini-kiln (February 18, 2023)

    What could be more fun than playing with molten coloured glass? Doing it with someone you like spending time with, of course! Together, learn how to dam, heat, and stir molten glass to create four totally unique glass pendants. Glass compatibility, glass casting, and mini-kiln firing will also be covered. Once fired, the pieces will be fire polished and finished with silver-plated bails, ready to wear. Beginners are welcome.

  • Workshop | G109 | Fusing technique: Fusing with Mica (February 25, 2023)

    Who doesn’t love the sparkle of gold, silver, and bronze Mica? Explore the dramatic effects that can be achieved capturing this shiny silicate mineral in fused glass. Participants will create two pendants and a 6-inch square fused and slumped dish demonstrating both the palette and airbrush technique. Beginners are welcome.
