Spring 2025: Spring into creativity!

Welcome to Glasstronomy Studios’ adult art glass workshop program. This calendar details workshops and courses offered from May to June 2025.

Join Education director, Melanie Kidd, and this season’s guest instructors, Millean Kung and Udiya Swamy, for a vibrant season of glass artistry. Whether you’re brand new to the world of glass, exploring a new technique, or refining your current skills, there’s lots of opportunity to spark your creativity this spring.

From fused glass to mosaic to stained glass — get ready for hands-on fun, expert guidance, and endless inspiration. Let’s make this a season to remember — full of colour, creativity, and community!

Registration and payment options:

We offer the following payment methods for registering for workshops and courses:

1. By e-transfer:

  • Email us at info@glasstronomystudios.ca to confirm space availability.
  • We will send you an itemized invoice detailing your selected workshop or course and the total fee (including HST).
  • Once confirmed, you can e-transfer the total fee to Glasstronomy Studios at info@glasstronomystudios.ca.

2. In person:

  • Visit the Studio during our business hours (Tuesday to Friday, 10 am to 4 pm) to pay via cash, debit, MasterCard, or Visa.

3. By Phone:

  • Call us at 905-415-9777 to pay using MasterCard or Visa.

Please note: HST will be added to the listed fee at time of payment.

Cancellation policy: A Studio credit will be issued for cancellations up to 48 hours before start date. We regret that Studio credits will not be issued under the 48-hour threshold.

Studio credits can be applied to a future purchase of a workshop or course.

  • Course | B237 | Beginner/Intermediate stained glass: Lead came technique (May 8, 15, 22, and 29, 2025)

    Embark on a creative journey with our four-evening beginner course in stained glass using the traditional lead came technique. This course is perfect for those eager to learn the artistry of stained glass while creating a beautiful, framed panel that can enhance any space.

    Each session includes guided instruction, demonstrations, and ample time for hands-on practice, ensuring you develop your skills and confidence as you create a stunning 8-inch x 10-inch stained glass panel.

    Whether you’re a complete beginner, a DYI enthusiast, or looking to expand your artistic repertoire, this course offers a supportive and inspiring environment. Join us to bring your artistic vision to life and take home a beautiful piece of stained glass art that reflects your creativity!

    What you will learn:

    • Introduction to stained glass: Explore the history and fundamentals of stained glass art, including an overview of materials and tools.
    • Lead came technique: Master the classic lead came method, which allows for sturdy construction, line symmetry, and precise geometric representation.
    • Design fundamentals: Select from several different patterns, focusing on colour selection, composition, and the techniques to bring your panel to life.
    • Glass cutting skills: Learn essential techniques for safely and accurately cutting and shaping coloured and textured glass pieces to fit your design.
    • Assembling your panel: Gain hands-on experience in the lead came assembly process, including securing glass pieces, soldering and glazing.

Lunchtime lessons on Zoom

  • Tutorial | T511Z | The mystery of Mica (May 9, 2025)

    Who doesn’t love the sparkle of gold, silver, and bronze Mica? Explore the dramatic effects that can be achieved capturing this shiny silicate mineral in fused glass. Melanie Kidd will demonstrate both the palette and airbrush technique.

    When: Friday, May 9, 2025, from noon to 1 pm
    Fee: $30 + HST


  • Tutorial | T512Z | Silk-screening on glass 101 (June 13, 2025)

    Painting on glass offers endless possibilities for design enhancement. During this one-hour session, Melanie Kidd will answer questions on

    • how to prepare a screen for printing,
    • burn an image onto a screen,
    • apply ink (both black and coloured) onto glass, and
    • fire silkscreen ink onto your pieces.

    When: Friday, June 13, 2025, from noon to 1 pm
    Fee: $30 + HST

  • Workshop (FULL) | G302 | All about Glassline with Millean Kung (May 3, 2025)

    Create stunning 3D art glass! | A fun, exploration of Glassline products

    Ready to take your creativity to the next level? Join guest artist, Millean Kung, for this engaging workshop. Participants will explore a variety of exciting techniques using Glassline products, including chalk, paint, and paper — all designed to help create vibrant textures and stunning 3D effects.

    Learn how to apply techniques like dabbing, sponging, and streaking, and then layer them to craft your own 4-inch x 4-inch x ½-inch art glass block.

    Learn and love:

    • Easy-to-learn techniques using Glassline products
    • How to layer colours and textures for bold, 3D visual effects
    • A fun and rewarding creative process
    • A one-of-a-kind layered glass block — ready to display!

  • Workshop (FULL) | G303 | Vitreous paint and enamels with Udiya Swamy (May 3, 2025)

    Unlock the art of traditional painting on glass. Step into the world of glass artistry in this dynamic workshop lead by guest artist, Udiya Swamy. You will learn how to bring your vision to life using brushwork techniques, vibrant colours, and the unique magic of vitreous paint and enamels.

    Whether you are a seasoned artist looking to elevate your skills or beginning your journey with glass painting, this immersive experience is designed to spark creativity and expand your technique. You will discover how to combine enamel and vitreous paints to create compelling, light-catching images on glass.

    By the end of the workshop, you will have made two suncatchers and three pendants, each ready to be fired in the kiln. The suncatchers will help you master backlit compositions and navigate the challenges of working with opaque enamels. The pendants will focus on the art of front-illuminated designs, offering a completely different perspective and style.

    Join us and leave not only with beautiful, hand-crafted pieces — but with the skills and inspiration to keep creating long after the workshop ends.

  • Workshop | G304 | Fusing with glass and metal: Bird on a branch (May 10, 2025)

    Unleash your creativity and discover the exciting world of fused glass sculpture — where form meets function and imagination takes flight! In this unique morning workshop, participants will learn how to incorporate brass, copper, and stainless steel wire and rod into fused are glass. These simple but useful materials let you suspend, connect, detail, and display your creations — no fancy hardware or expensive framing needed!

    Participants will create a whimsical 6-inch x 6-inch bird-on-a-branch piece that blends natural inspiration with mixed-media design.

    When: Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 10 am to 12 pm
    Fee: $115 + HST (includes all materials and project firings)

  • Workshop | G186 | Fusing fun: Cast glass bowl (May 10, 2025)

    Don’t toss it — transform it! Participants will spend a creative afternoon learning about glass compatibility and volume control while turning leftover glass into a show-stopping bowl! Using versatile fibre products and 96 COE glass, participants will explore the art of loose fibre damming and multi-layer cathedral tinting while turning scrap glass into a vibrant, one-of-a-kind 8-inch fused glass bowl that is functional and eye-catching, perfect for display of gifting.

    Once fired, participants will return to cold work their piece prior to selecting a mold for slumping.

    When: Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 1 to 4 pm

  • Workshop | I361 | Stained glass: Patio stone (May 24 AND 31, 2025)

    Celebrate the season in style at the Studio with this creative and colourful workshop! During this two-day workshop, participants will make a stunning 16-inch hexagonal stained glass patio stone — a bold and beautiful way to welcome summer and brighten up your garden, flowerbed, or outdoor living space.

    Choose from a selection of vibrant and whimsical patterns and learn how to:

    • Prepare your pattern and mold for stained glass and concrete
    • Apply glass to a concrete mold
    • Mix and pour concrete to create a stained glass patio stone

    Your finished stone can become a unique patio tabletop when added to a wrought iron stand (stand not included).

    When: Saturdays, May 24 AND 31, 2025, from 10 am to 4 pm

  • Workshop | G305 | Fusing fun: Canada Day garden stake (June 7, 2025)

    Celebrate the true north strong and free with this eye-catching addition to our garden stake series! In honour of Canada Day, you will craft a vibrant glass firework display — bursting with colour, sparkle, and national pride.

    Using 96 COE glass, glass accessories, dichroic accents, and kiln fibre, you will design and build a striking 11-inch x 14-inch piece, proudly mounted in a custom-designed metal maple leaf garden stake.

    Perfect for:

    • Adding a pop of colour to your balcony, garden, or walkway
    • Celebrating Canada Day in style
    • Beginners and seasoned glass lovers alike!

    When: Saturday, June 7, 2025, from 10 am to 4 pm
    Fee: $245 + HST (includes all materials, project firing, and custom-designed decorative stake)

  • Workshop | B240 | Copper foil stained glass technique: Canada proud (June 14, 2025)

    Elbows up, Canada! Show your Canadian pride with this vibrant 12-inch stained glass and metal window panel, designed to celebrate the spirit of the north in bold colour and classic craftsmanship.

    In this hands-on workshop, you'll use the copper foil method to assemble your stained glass design, perfectly framed within a laser-cut metal maple leaf. Once soldered and finished, your piece will be ready to hang and shine — whether in a window, sunroom, or anywhere that needs a little patriotic pick-me-up.

    What you will get:

    • A unique mix of stained glass and metalwork
    • A finished 12-inch maple leaf panel, ready to hang

  • Workshop | G306 | Fused glass mosaic: “Butter-fence-flies” (June 5 AND 12, 2025)

    Butterflies represent hope, transformation, and the power of positive change — and now you can bring that spirit to life through art. In this uplifting and creative workshop, you will design and craft your very own fused glass mosaic butterfly using 96 COE glass, vibrant glass powders, and wire. Once fired and grouted, your finished piece will be ready to display on a garden fence, patio wall, or inside your home as a beautiful reminder that the future is yours to shape.

    When: Thursdays, June 5 AND 12, 2025, from 7 to 10 pm
