Welcome to Glasstronomy Studios’ adult art glass workshop program. This calendar details workshops and courses offered from November to December 2024.

This season focuses on fun projects for the holiday. Whether you are beginning your creative art glass journey or want to apply those learned skills, our project-based learning program teaches best practices and techniques that will give you a taste of the possibilities. Explore the medium in a fun and friendly environment while creating something uniquely yours. Nurture your glass skills and let your creativity flourish!

How to register

To register, we currently accept payment in person (cash, Debit, MasterCard and Visa), by email (e-transfer), or by phone (MasterCard and Visa). Please note that HST will be added to the listed fee at time of payment.

Cancellation policy: A Studio credit will be issued for cancellations up to 48 hours before start date. We regret that Studio credits will not be issued under the 48-hour threshold.

Studio credits can be applied to a future purchase of a workshop or course.

Courses

  • Course | A440 | Advanced fusing techniques: Flow dynamics, colour montage, and grisaille underpainting (November 7, 14, 21, and 28, 2024)

    Calling all advanced glass fusers ready to elevate your craft! This four-evening course, inspired by renowned glass artist, Narcissus Quagliata, will take your glass palette creation to the next level. Through a combination of demonstrations, hands-on instruction, and guided projects with Glasstronomy Studio’s glass guru, Melanie Kidd, and mentee and glass painter, Udiya Swamy, you will explore the dynamic effects of flowing glass to create two unique colour montage backdrops for grisaille underpaintings.

    Using traditional glass painting techniques, you will master the art of shading, outlining, texturizing, and layering glass paints to produce two stunning pieces: one 8-inch x 8-inch and another 12-inch x 16-inch. By fusing these advanced techniques, you will create original, one-of-a-kind works of art—perfect for showcasing your talent and creativity.

    This course includes:

    • Professional instruction by two instructors
    • All 96 COE glass material
    • Traditional glass paint and mediums
    • All fibre material required for firing
    • All firings for two complete projects
    • Frames and mounting adhesives for two completed projects
    • Firing schedules

  • Course | I451 | Intermediate fusing techniques: Plaster and clay casting (December 5 and 12, 2024)

    This intermediate-level course is perfect for glass artists eager to expand their technical skills in fusing through plaster and clay casting. Participants will delve into the process of creating custom molds and casting forms, enabling them to develop intricate patterns, shapes, and textures in their glasswork.

    The course focuses on producing a 12-inch x 16-inch drop-out serving tray and three 8-inch drop-out dishes, incorporating soft colours and complex bas-relief designs—ideal for use or gifting during the holiday season. Additionally, participants will take home two bisque-fired clay molds and durable drop-out molds that can be reused for future projects.

    This course includes:

    • Professional instruction
    • All 96 COE glass material
    • Clay and plaster
    • Tools for the creation of bas-relief
    • Duraboard and durafiber
    • All project firings and firing schedules

Lunchtime Lessons on Zoom

  • Tutorial | T506Z | Understanding the heat/time continuum: Kiln programming and project trouble shooting (November 8, 2024)

    Glass fusing is an expansive practice incorporating an endless number of possibilities and probabilities. “How long?”, “how hot?”, “how come?”, the most common questions of kiln firing. Whether you have a kiln at home or are ready to ask more of your kiln firing studio, this one-hour information sharing session, followed by open Q & A from your fellow glass fusers, is sure to shed some light on the spectacular science that is kiln forming.

    When: Friday, November 8, 2024, from 12 to 1 pm

  • Tutorial | T507Z | Ironing out the decorations: Sculptural soldering (December 13, 2024)

    After the glass cutter, the soldering iron is the most important tool in your stained glass toolbox. Not only can it be a big investment, but it is also an essential part of all stained glass construction and decoration! Spend an hour learning the dos and don’ts of soldering iron use and maintenance, and watch a live demonstration of basic soldering, basic decorative soldering, and sculptural soldering.

    When: Friday, December 13, 2024, from 12 to 1 pm

Workshops

  • Workshop | G296 | Fusing fun: Holiday ornament greeting cards (November 2, 2024)

    Just in time for holiday greetings, this fun workshop is sure to elevate your card-giving game! Participants will create unique, one-of-a-kind fused glass ornaments, beautifully incorporated into 5-inch x 5-inch coloured card stock greeting cards. Using 96 COE glass and accessories, you will design up to six diamond-shaped fused glass ornaments featuring festive holiday motifs. These ornaments will be carefully inserted to hang as part of the custom-made cards, ready to send to friends and family. Add a sparkly message for that perfect personal touch!

    All project materials and firings are included.

  • Workshop | G297 | Fusing fun: Snow family with vitrigraph cane and stand (November 9, 2024)

    Chase away the winter blues with this delightful, fused glass snow family sculpture, guaranteed to bring a smile to your face! In this workshop, participants will use the Morton Teeny Circle Cutter and glass modeling clay to sculpt and create an 8-inch x 12-inch snow family, complete with a fused glass stand—perfect for gifting or displaying at home.

    As a bonus, you’ll have the opportunity to watch or try your hand at creating vitrigraph candy cane.

    All project materials and firings are included.
    Beginner fusers are welcome, though basic glass cutting experience is required.

  • Workshop | G298 | Stained glass fun: Large bevel snowflake (November 16, 2024)

    Patterns and prisms, angels and more! Join us for a creative day of concentric glass art as we use diamond, star, and square bevels to craft a stunning snowflake-inspired radial design. Participants will also experiment with wire work and coloured glass globs to create a unique 12-inch soldered piece, perfect for hanging in a window or gifting to that special someone.

    Just like real snowflakes, no two designs will be alike, making each creation truly one-of-a-kind!

    All project materials are included.
    Soldering experience required.

  • Workshop | I452 | Fusing fun: Game board mania, Dice Match and Pets & Pitfalls (November 23, 2024)

    Who doesn’t love playing with glass—especially when it features soft edges, playful designs, and fun game pieces? In Elizabeth’s latest board game glasstravaganza, you will create Dice Match and Pet & Pitfalls, a colourful, double-sided 12-inch square game board. Complete with its own carrying case, this project is packed with techniques like Glassline paint application, freeze-and-fire, and modeling clay work using 96 COE glass.

    Full of creativity and fun, this fused glass masterpiece will be ready to gift or enjoy just in time for the holidays. So, roll the dice and see where the path takes you!

  • Workshop | FULL | G138 | Fusing fun: Fused holiday ornaments (December 7, 2024)

    We love how light dances off glass, especially when it comes from colourful, shiny fused glass ornaments! Join Glasstronomy Studios mentee, Millean Kung, for a morning of creative fun in our bright and cheerful studio. Using 96 COE Oceanside compatible glass and accessories, participants will create up to eight 2-inch x 3-inch holiday-inspired ornaments, perfect for gifting or enjoying yourself.

    All materials and firings are included.

  • Workshop | G299 | Fusing fun: Christmas tree light (December 7, 2024)

    O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum … Sparkling with aventurine, dichroic glass, and fairy lights, this 8-inch x 10-inch Christmas tree will twinkle with cheer without shedding any needles! Using 96 COE Oceanside compatible aventurine green glass, participants will construct their tree and a clear glass stand, both of which will be fired and slumped in the studio kilns. Once fired, the tree will be attached to the stand and adorned with LED lights and mini ornaments.
