Welcome to Glasstronomy Studios’ adult art glass workshop program. This calendar details workshops and courses offered from September to October 2024.

This season focuses on best practices and experimentation. Whether you are beginning your creative art glass journey or want to apply those learned skills, our project-based learning program teaches best practices and techniques that will give you a taste of the possibilities. Explore the medium in a fun and friendly environment while creating something uniquely yours. Nurture your glass skills and let your creativity flourish!

How to register

To register, we currently accept payment in person (cash, Debit, MasterCard and Visa), by email (e-transfer), or by phone (MasterCard and Visa). Please note that HST will be added to the listed fee at time of payment.

Cancellation policy: A Studio credit will be issued for cancellations up to 48 hours before start date. We regret that Studio credits will not be issued under the 48-hour threshold.

Studio credits can be applied to a future purchase of a workshop or course.

Courses

  • Course (FULL) | A439 | Advanced fusing: The drop experiment (September 12, 19, and 26, 2024)

    Okay folks, you have been asking for it, so here you go: Let the drop experiments begin! Over three evenings, participants will have the opportunity to create a professionally finished 4-inch x 4-inch x 9-inch noodle designed drop vase as well as an entire GTS 2541 kiln load of up to six different drop experiments. During this glass lab experience, participants will learn how glass volume, aperture size, drop height and temperature play together to create a multitude of different results. Kiln programming, fibre mold making, wet saw cutting, and cold working will also be covered. How low can your drop go? Let’s play and see!

    All equipment usage, clear 96 COE glass and multi-coloured 96 COE glass noodles, fibreboard, and fibre paper, and project firings included.
    Material for the kiln load drop experiment not included.

  • Course (FULL) | G196 | Beginner stained glass: Copper foil construction (October 3, 10, 17, and 24, 2024)

    Welcome to the world of traditional stained glass. Whether you are new to the art form or want to revisit it, join us in our bright, well-equipped studio for a comprehensive introduction. This four-night course covers the safe handling of materials, studio etiquette, tool usage, glass cutting and shaping, copper foil technique, soldering, panel framing, and finishing. Industry professional, Melanie Kidd, will guide you through the completion of an 8-inch x 10-inch panel that will prepare you for all you can dream up next! There are several patterns to choose from.

    Metals, chemicals, project glass, and tool usage included.

    When: Thursdays, October 3, 10, 17, and 24, 2024, from 7 to 10 pm

Workshops

  • Workshop | G263 | Fusing fun: String theory (September 14, 2024)

    What do “Mad Plaid”, “Magic Carpet”, “Quilted String”, and “Floral Fling” have in common? They are all some of the fun ways we can play with 96 COE glass stringers to create tapestry-inspired fused and slumped pieces. Colourful and intricate, these one-of-a-kind creations are sure to catch the eye, time and time again. Participants will receive a kit including six tubes of glass stringers (valued at $180) and pre-fired glass fabric, to create a minimum of four fused and slumped pieces. We will also make our own stringers in the vitrigraph kiln. We will leave no thread unstrung!

    All project materials and firings included.
    Beginners are welcome.

  • Workshop | G294 | Fusing fun: Toadstool stake (September 21, 2024)

    Playful and full of personal detail, the next in our Seasonal stake series offers plenty of opportunity for personalization. Boasting techniques and applications such as Impasto, Glassline painting, and mini kiln firing, participants will create their “under the gills” scene using 96 COE glass and glass powder, dichroic glass, and vitrigraph stringers. Whether inspired by nature or whimsy, it’s a great addition to your fall décor.

    All project glass and firings included.
    Metal stake or metal stand optional.

    When: Saturday, September 21, 2024, from 10 am to 4 pm
    Fee: $325 + HST (includes all project glass and firings) + metal stake ($95 + HST) OR metal stand ($70 + HST) (optional)


  • Workshop | I449 | Fusing technique: Layered landscape block (September 28, 2024)

    Creating depth and detail while working deep is a fused glass process that requires multiple firings and careful planning. Join fused glass landscape guru, Melanie Kidd, as she shares her successes and mishaps while developing your very own 8-inch by 8-inch by 1-inch layered glass landscape block. Boasting several techniques including glass impasto, glass painting, and loose fibre damming, participants will explore perspective and depth while incorporating a high level of detail to their finished pieces. Using premade 96 COE frittage and vitrigraph stringers, 96 COE glass, as well as Glassline paint and fusing substrates, participants will translate a pre-printed photograph or image into a one-of-a-kind fused glass block. Kiln programming will also be covered.

  • Workshop | B206 | Beginner glass fusing (October 5, 2024)

    Play with colour and form as you explore the magic of fused glass art. Spend the day in our bright, spacious, and professionally equipped Studio while creating unique fused glass jewellery and a one-of-a-kind fused and slumped dish. In this comprehensive workshop, participants will learn about glass compatibility and volume control as well as glass cutting and shaping with our expert instructor.

    All project materials, firings, and tool usage included.

    When: Saturday, October 5, 2024, from 10 am to 4 pm
    Fee: $195 + HST (includes all project materials, firings, and tool usage)

  • Workshop | G295 | Soldering technique: Halloween inked lanterns with copper overlay (October 19, 2024)

    Here's a great upcycling project that will turn your trash into spook-tacular treasure! During this one-day workshop, participants will play with solder and alcohol ink while making hanging glass jar lanterns with one-of-a-kind Halloween inspired solder overlay designs and decorative lids. In addition to creating ornamental lids and practicing the classic decorative soldering techniques of bamboo, hammered, pearls, and more, participants will learn how to design, cut, and apply sheet copper to contoured glass forms. Combining the fun to be had with alcohol ink, these colourful lanterns that have been embellished with your unique soldered silhouettes make for the perfect addition to your indoor or outdoor Halloween décor. Participants will make one to three decorative lanterns.

    Please provide your own, clean, lidded glass jars.

  • Workshop | I450 | Glass cutting technique: All things Morton (October 26, 2024)

    Have fun with shapes! We have been using this cutting system for over 20 years, creating accurate geometric shapes, patterns galore, and playful characters too! But, man oh man, there’s so much to remember, right?! In this open technique workshop, participants will use the morning revisiting cutting system calibration, pattern formulas, and past Morton System workshop inspired projects, and spend the afternoon making the project of their choice.

  • Workshop | B235 | Fusing fun: All things tealights (October 27, 2024)

    Warm up your décor with a trio of fused glass tealight holders. Spend the morning creating three unique tealight holders in three different styles and techniques: lacy, mosaic, and “person”-alized. Participants will learn about Studio safety and best practices, glass compatibility and volume control, as well as cutting and shaping glass.

    All project materials, firings, and tool usage included.

    When: Sunday, October 27, 2024, from 10 am to 12 pm

Lunchtime Lessons on Zoom

Glasstronomy Studios is excited to announce a new tutorial program for our fellow glass enthusiasts. Join us on Zoom once a month while you sit back and enjoy your lunch from wherever you may be, for an hour of stained and fused glass information, real time demonstrations, how to lessons, followed by an open forum Q & A. Look forward to guest artists, the down and dirty of maintenance and repair, and the secrets of mastering technique. Straight up and interactive, feed your curiosity and whet your creative appetite!   • Tutorial | T504Z | Kiln SOS: Maintenance and repair (September 13, 2024)

    Our kilns are the most vital piece of equipment in our professional and personal fused glass studios. It’s essential that we keep them running smoothly and efficiently. Whether it’s cleaning your element tracks or replacing relays, knowing what to look for and do will save you lots of $$$ in the long run. Join Master Fuser, Melanie Kidd, for an hour of candid assessment, DYI repair and maintenance of our Evenheat Studio Pro14 and GTS 2541 kilns followed by open Q & A.

  • Tutorial | T505Z | Traditional glass painting with guest artist Udiya Swamy (October 11, 2024)

    We are excited to see how much Glasstronomy Studios’ mentee, Udiya Swamy, has developed over his first year in our Small Business Arts Mentorship Program (SBAM). Exploring both traditional and modern glass painting techniques, Udiya has much to share with fellow glass creatives. Watch a live demonstration of his unique interpretations and get a peek at what is coming in Studio later this fall.

  • Tutorial | T506Z | Understanding the heat/time continuum: Kiln programming and project trouble shooting (November 8, 2024)

    Glass fusing is an expansive practice incorporating an endless number of possibilities and probabilities. “How long?”, “how hot?”, “how come?”, the most common questions of kiln firing. Whether you have a kiln at home or are ready to ask more of your kiln firing studio, this one-hour information sharing session, followed by open Q & A from your fellow glass fusers, is sure to shed some light on the spectacular science that is kiln forming.

  • Tutorial | T507Z | Ironing out the decorations: Sculptural soldering (December 13, 2024)

    After the glass cutter, the soldering iron is the most important tool in your stained glass toolbox. Not only can it be a big investment, but it is also an essential part of all stained glass construction and decoration! Spend an hour learning the dos and don’ts of soldering iron use and maintenance, and watch a live demonstration of basic soldering, basic decorative soldering, and sculptural soldering.
