Welcome to Glasstronomy Studios’ adult art glass learning program. This calendar showcases the courses and workshops offered from January to March 2022. This season is a return to basics for beginners and an exploration of classic techniques for the more advanced. Registration now open.

Scheduling changes

How to register

To register, we currently accept payment in person (cash, Debit, MasterCard and Visa), by email (etransfer), or by phone (MasterCard and Visa). Please note that HST will be added to the listed fee at time of payment.

Cancellation policy: A Studio credit will be issued for cancellations up to 48 hours before start date. We regret that Studio credits will not be issued under the 48-hour threshold.

Studio credits can be applied to a future purchase of a workshop or course.

COVID-19 health measures: Our team is fully-immunized against COVID-19 and we welcome individuals who have had two doses of any COVID-19 vaccine approved by the Government of Canada. At time of publication, all standard COVID-19 safety protocols remain in place and in practice.

Please follow Public Health Ontario’s guidance: 1. Stay home if unwell; 2. Sanitize hands on entering Studio vestibule; 3. Wear face mask during time in Studio; 4. Maintain two-metre physical distancing; 5. Cough or sneeze into elbow; 6. Get the COVID-19 booster.

Courses

  • Course | G178 | Beginner/intermediate fused and foiled round panel (cross-disciplined) (January 20, 27, February 3, 10, 17, and 24, 2022)

    The beauty of light shining through glass has inspired us through the ages. Add the layered opportunity of glass fusing and we can easily add a unique touch to a traditional favourite. During this multi-disciplinary six-week course, participants will learn the best practices of glass cutting, shaping, foiling and soldering while creating a 14-inch diameter round window panel. Basic fusing principles of glass compatibility and layering using 96 COE glass and accessories will also be covered.

    Some glass, foil, solder, pattern, frame, and glass firings included.
    Beginner fusers are welcome but glass cutting experience required.

    When: Thursdays, January 20, 27, February 3, 10, 17, and 24, 2022, from 10 am to 12:30 pm
    Fee: $295 + HST + sheet glass (includes some glass, foil, solder, pattern, frame, and project firings)


  • Course | B209 | Beginner stained glass: Panel (February 3, 10, and 17, 2022)

    Welcome to stained glass! Bright and engaging, stained glass is a wonderful medium to inspire creativity and relaxation. This three-week course includes hands on instruction in traditional lead came stained glass in our spacious and fully-equipped studio. Participants will learn how to safely handle, cut and break sheet glass, and lead and glaze an 8-inch x 10-inch stained glass panel.

    Individual tool kits for use during the course and all project materials included.

    When: Thursdays, February 3, 10, and 17, 2022, from 7 to 10 pm
    Fee: $175 + HST (includes individual tool kits for use during the course and all project materials)


  • Course | B206 | Beginner fusing (February 12, 2022)

    Play with colour and form as you explore the magic of fused glass art. Spend two evenings in our bright, spacious, and professionally-equipped studio while creating unique fused glass jewellery and a one-of-a-kind fused and slumped dish. Participants will learn about glass compatibility and volume control as well as glass cutting and shaping with our expert instructor.

    Tool usage and all materials and project firings included.

    When: Saturday, February 12, 2022, from 10 am to 4 pm (formerly Thursdays, January 20 and 27, 2022, from 7 to 10 pm)
    Fee: $125 + HST (includes all materials and project firings)

  • Course | I432 | Stained glass technique: Freestyle lampshade (March 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31, 2022)

    What to do with all the treasured stained glass cut offs we have squirrelled away for some rainy glass day? Make a fun and funky freestyle lampshade! Globe or cube-shaped, these soldered glass creations showcase fragments of colour and texture that will add sparkle to your indoor space. Spend your Thursday mornings in March in our bright and spacious, fully-equipped professional Studio enjoying the freedom of creative flow. Three-dimensional construction, jig making and how to use pre-made forms for shape will also be covered.

    All materials excluding lighting components are included.

  • Course | G263 | Fusing fun: String theory (March 3, 10, 17, and 24, 2022)

    What do “Mad Plaid”, “Magic Carpet” and “Noodle Doodle” have in common? They are all some of the fun ways we can play with 96 COE glass stringers and noodles to create tapestry-inspired fused and slumped pieces. Colourful and intricate, these one-of-a-kind creations are sure to catch the eye time and again. Participants will receive a kit including five tubes each of glass stringers and noodles (valued at $250) and will create a minimum of six fused and slumped pieces. We will also spend an evening making our own stringers in the vitrigraph kiln. We will leave no thread unstrung!

Workshops

  • Workshop | G264 | Fusing fun: Heavy metal jewellery (January 29, 2022) | FULL

    It’s time to add real bling to your jewellery fusing! Spend the day exploring all the ways we can incorporate metal into fused glass while creating one-of-a-kind glass and metal cabochons. Using 96 COE glass, 96 COE dichroic glass, silver clay, gold leaf, and copper, participants will form and fire as many pieces as possible.

  • Workshop | A428 | Advanced fusing technique: Exploring glass powder forms (Postponed to a future date)

    F1 + CMC = WOW! A new year, a different way to play with glass! During this two-day comprehensive course, participants will use 96 COE glass powder and CMC substrate to explore the “elastic” possibilities of this “hot” duo. Pâte de verre, glass impasto, glass wafers and washes, along with mold making and sandblasting will be covered. Each participant will receive a kit including plaster, Castalot, a pre-selected palette of five jars of 96 COE glass powder, CMC, durafibre, and picture frame.

  • Workshop | G265 | Fusing fun: Lamp on edge (February 26, 2022)

    Chase away the winter blahs with this screen of coloured light. Whether choosing to go monochromatic, selecting a hot or cold palette, or embracing the entire colour spectrum, participants will have fun playing with colour in this project that applies 96 COE cathedral clear and coloured glass on edge to an 8-inch clear base. Participants will also make the clear stand on which their curved and coloured piece will be applied after firing.

    Beginner fusers are welcome but glass cutting experience required.

  • Workshop | G266 | Fusing fun: Fused mosaic wall clock (March 5, 2022)

    Dress up your space with a fun and colourful fused glass mosaic. Using 96 COE glass, participants will learn how to mimic the traditional effect of mosaic without the mess and with the added fun of pings and strings. Participants will create a funky shaped wall clock roughly a square foot in size. Once fired pieces will be drilled and mounted with a clock mechanism ready to hang.

  • Workshop | I321 | Stained glass technique: Decorative soldering (March 12, 2022)

    Do you struggle with your soldering? Does your solder “spit, pit or prick”? Do you wonder what role flux plays or why there are different solder ratios? Find out why and how to achieve the perfect look. This workshop will also teach how to pearl, bridge and pull your solder into several decorative styles that will enhance your copper foil projects. Participants will create a five-inch by five-inch beveled sun catcher.

  • Workshop | G267 | Fusing fun: Sandblasted iridescent glass dish and coaster set (March 12, 2022) | FULL

    Welcome our new sandblasting equipment to the Studio with this fun and dynamic project. Participants will learn how to safely operate the sandblaster while creating blasted designs on a fused and slumped dish and coaster set. Sandblasting pattern design and appliques will be covered.

    All materials and project firings included.
    Beginner fusers are welcome.

  • Workshop | G268 | Morton System technique: Fused bullseye bowls (March 19, 2022) | FULL

    Circles and rings, big and small, how oh how can we do them all … perfectly round? By using the Morton Circle and Border System of course! Spend the day learning and practicing how to use this cool Morton System add on while making two 11-inch, bullseye bowls. Bring your Morton Circle and Border System or share ours.

    Project firings included.
    Four square feet of 96 COE sheet glass not included.
    Beginner fusers are welcome but glass cutting experience required.
